Thursday was a typical literature circle day in ELA. We spent the first part of class discussing chapters 11, 12, and 13. Then you had time to work on reading chapters 14 and 15 for Friday. We decided to hold off on Friday's meeting, but will discuss these chapters on Monday (along with chapter 16). You had the chance to finish your work with the five story elements, do your work for Monday, and complete a Google Classroom assignment predicting what would happen to three of the characters in the story. Have a nice weekend!
ELA class flew by today because the first part of it was library! Mrs. Veach came upstairs to review some reference skills. After library, you rewatched The Tortoise and the Hare then immediately finished your story elements chart. I will take a look at these for a grade. We watched the news and that was it! Tomorrow we will have a meeting for chapters 11, 12, and 13. Make sure you are ready!
Today we took a break from discussing Kit's story in The Witch of Blackbird Pond and had a lesson day. We focused on story elements, which are setting, plot, character, conflict, and theme. You started by reviewing theme and then we took some quick notes. You did a nice job remembering back to Remember the Titans to help us practice with these new terms. Flocabulary came next as we watched Five Things. You analyzed the lyrics for definitions and examples. Then, you came up with your own examples! These were really clever. Finally, you practiced identifying these story elements by watching an old Disney move, The Tortoise and the Hare. You will finish this work tomorrow. We will have a shortened class due to library. Remember, library will be during the first part of ELA and will take place in the classroom because of the book fair.
Today was a literature circle day. We had a meeting right away to discuss chapters 8, 9, and 10. Some important things that we discussed today were Hannah Tupper and how Kit connects to her as the other "outsider." After the meeting, you had some time to do work for Meeting 6. You will need to have chapters 11, 12, and 13 done. Tuesday and Wednesday are lesson days.
I have not been doing a great job at keeping up with this! I will do better once we return from our mini break.
Thursday and Friday of last week were typical literature circle days. I like working with my new groups, too! Seventh grade does a really nice job with discussions! Monday was a funky day because I fell on the way in and had to go home. You had time to work on The Witch of Blackbird Pond and then started watching Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. You also spent Tuesday watching this while I was helping with 8th grade high school applications. Wednesday was field trip day! I hope you enjoyed the movie and the entire experience. Have a great long weekend! I hope you enjoyed your long weekend! Tuesday's class was planned by Ms. Scott, my student from Buffalo State College. Students in 7B had me lead the lesson, while students in 7A got a break from me and had Ms. Scott as their teacher. We did some more theme practicing with videos and then played a "guessing game" of sorts. Wednesday was a library day. You had some time to prepare for Meeting 2 for The Witch of Blackbird Pond, which is Thursday. You must come ready to discuss chapters 2, 3, and 4. At the end of class, everyone signed up for a new reading program we will use called Whooo's Reading. I am excited to see everyone's shelves (and fancy owl avatars).
Today we practiced theme. We began by doing a couple quick readings about Messy Missy and Money Mark. After checking these over, we took notes and did a practice together. Both groups did a nice job! After, we used the videos below to determine theme and discussed how we knew about this. The exit ticket that was planned for today will be completed on Tuesday. Enjoy your long weekend!
On Tuesday you continued working with the idea of communities and how they help us to become who we are. Then, it was time to build background! We looked at colonial America and the Puritans. Then, we discussed the Salem Witch Trials. You had excellent questions about this and it set us up for some great discussions on Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday you received your books and we read the first chapter of The Witch of Blackbird Pond aloud. It was a nice way to begin the book. Thursday started with lots of discussion about our folders, literature circle expectations, and our class website. Both groups were very attentive audiences as we went through everything. You had a bit of time to get started. Make sure you pay close attention to the directions in your folder. Also, remember that your literature circle materials can all be found on the Literature Circle Materials tab!
You took your first Interim Assessment on Thursday and Friday last week. Some of you have to finish, but most people were able to get this done already. On Monday we started our next unit called How Do Communities Shape People? We investigated our own hometowns and neighborhoods. This is going to help us see how the main character of our next book responds to her community.
