The Hitchhiker is not technically a short story. It is really called a "radio drama." Before TVs were in almost every American house, people would gather around the radios to hear stories like this one. Orson Welles, who was famous for putting on suspenseful and scary radio dramas, is the narrator and main character of The Hitchhiker. He also narrated a radio drama called The War of the Worlds, which is about an alien invasion. He was so good at his job that people actually believed that aliens were taking over! It created panic and craziness! He references this at the beginning of The Hitchhiker. Follow along using the script that I give you. (There are some small changes between the script I give you and the words you will hear. Just go with it.) Enjoy the sound effects and take in the story. We will talk more about it next week!
Ms. Scott is starting your 42 Is Not Just a Number book clubs! We will update this page from time to time.
We have been using our Enrichment time to make adjustments to our schedule because of snow days and Spirit Week. This will continue as we begin reviewing for our state assessment in early April.
This week we will prepare for our Whole School Morning Meeting. I would like to finish our work with Good Enough if there is enough time.
We are going to spend some time over the next couple weeks reading a story about a young girl and her quest to "fit in." Below are the materials. Let's be great!
Mrs. Kramer and I made some changes to the Enrichment groups. These will be your groups until after Winter Break. We will continue working on Membean, doing this for 45 minutes per week. In addition, we will look into the history of both rock and rap. We will have some discussions, comparing and contrasting, and working on assignments on Google Classroom.
This week's focus will be school integration. We will build on our knowledge from Remember the Titans to see how other groups of people were discriminated when trying to go to school. You will read about Sylvia Mendez, a Mexican-American girl who fought for her right to a proper education. This play is a true story. We will practice using some new vocabulary words - prejudice (added), discrimination, citizen, inferior, petition, and qualified - and work to develop strong paragraphs.
We've had a strange few weeks with teacher absences and days off. The good news is that our room is almost completely done! We've continued our work with Membean and Out of the Flames. Next week we will not split up (because of the shortened week and the field trip). After Thanksgiving we will begin something new!
You will do your Membean work on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday of this week. We will focus on an important historical event for the rest of the week. You will learn and read about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. It is a tragic and surprising event that led to a lot of changes in our nation's history. Let's hope our room is ready soon! |
